Outside the Wire

A new play by Jimi Stanton

Summary:

The story switches between Sergeant Mark Mercer in war-torn Baghdad and New England 6 months to a year later, as he struggles with his experiences at war and how it changed him, his fellow soldiers, and his family at home.

Half of the story follows a group of soldiers of the US Army, including one female soldier, as they go on missions in Iraq, relieve stress by playing cards, and the basic everyday life of a soldier overseas. As the story unfolds, we begin to piece together the differences in how this certain group of soldiers deal with their experiences at war. Through different circumstances we gain insight into why they joined the service in the first place, how they deal with being away from home for so long, how they find comfort and how they cope with the realities of war.

The other half of the story follows one of these soldiers - Sergeant Mark Mercer - after coming back to his life as a father in New England a few months after coming home from Iraq. When he arrives home, he quickly realizes that the life he left when he went to Iraq isn't the same life he has returned to. He has trouble opening up to his wife, Michelle. His 4-year-old daughter doesn't recognize him as her father. And he is burdened with the decisions he has made both before and during his service in the Army.

Mark's struggles begin to surface as he separates himself from his family, abuses alcohol and lashes out in rapid mood-swings. In an attempt to help Mark and salvage their family, Michelle tries to help Mark deal with his struggles and open up about his experiences in the war. But as the stakes build, Michelle begins to wonder if she herself is ready for Mark to open up.

Through a fragmented plot, intense interactive action and film/video we begin to figure out what Mark and his fellow soldiers have gone through, and why Mark feels more connected to the life he had as a soldier in Iraq than his life as a husband and father.
